Golf, Par Excellence:
Golf is one of the most popular sports in the area. Golfers are offered seven
state-of-the-art courses that not only allow them to play, but to enjoy the
beautiful landscape of the desert meeting the ocean ~ a unique and unforgettable
combination.
There is a Tom Fazio-designed course, three Jack Nicklaus-designed courses,
one Robert Trent Jones II, a Roy & Pete Dye signature club, and a Tom
Weiskopf-designed course. The best time to play is in the morning, however, the
afternoons are preferable for amateurs as there are fewer players and more time
to practice. Our Concierge can assist with bookings. Note: Courses tend to fill
up, and periodically some switching around is done to secure tee times.
Course Descriptions :
Querencia is the only private golf course in Los Cabos. As a
guest of Las Ventanas, you can experience the advantage of playing this
beautiful course. Golf course architect Tom Fazio created an indescribable
course with its own unique identity. Querencia incorporates the rugged desert
and infuses it with lush, oasis-like features. Querencia brings together all of
the influences one could imagine in an exclusive, secure and private community.
The course has shot values and a balance of holes to keep all playing abilities
wanting more. With elevation changes, rolling fairways and sculpted bunkers, the
golfer must employ a strategy to reach a good score.
Within the boundaries of this huge oceanfront resort development, nestled
among hotels Meliá Cabo Real, Las Ventanas al Paraíso, Casa del Mar and Meliá
Los Cabos, lies the magnificent Robert Trent Jones II championship golf course, Cabo
Real. The site of the 1999 PGA Senior Slam Tournament, the course is a
classic design laid over more than 7,000 yards of verdant landscape with three
oceanfront holes.
The Jack Nicklaus-designed El Dorado, completed in June of
1999, is an oceanfront championship course set primarily in the Arroyo near the
Westin Regina Hotel at the northeast end of the Cabo Real development. It
extends on both sides of the Transpeninsular Highway . The 18-hole course has
five holes adjacent to the ocean and four lakes. Length 7,050. Par 72. Practice
facilities available.
Ocean Course at Cabo Del Sol, with the Jack Nicklaus
Signature Ocean Course, is part of a planned complex of three. Nicklaus says
Cabo Del Sol has "the three best ocean finishing holes in the world."
The course is situated on the beach at Playa Barco Varado. Guests of the
1,800-acre development have about a mile of beach to play on. Instruction and
rentals are available. The par 72 course's front nine is 3,597 yards, with the
back nine at 3,440 yards. Brad Wheatley is the Head PGA Pro.
Opened in 2001, the Desert Course at Cabo Del Sol is Tom
Weiskopf's first design in all of Latin America. It sits parallel to the
existing "Ocean Course" and has ocean views from all 18 holes. The
course is designed through canyons, rock outcroppings, lakes and waterfalls with
holes routed through changes in elevation. Clubs and shoes are available for
rent. Yardage is 7,053 with a par of 72. Brad Wheatley is the Head PGA Pro.
Commanding a sweeping view of Land's End and the Sea of Cortez stands the Raven
Club. The design features Dye's characteristic waste bunkers. The par
5,607 yard 7th hole is regarded as the most challenging, with a large lake
making it tough for all but the pros. As for bunkers, Dye said, "At GPA
West, they're all transition bunkers. If your ball goes into the desert, it's
not difficult to find." The Golf Academy at Raven Club offers programs for
players of all skill levels. The par 72-course is 3,651 yards on the front nine,
the back nine is 3,569 yards. Steve Dodson is the Director of Golf.
Jack Nicklaus began designing the first signature course in Los Cabos, Palmilla,
in 1990, featuring the front "Arroyo Nine" and back "Mountain
Nine." Nicklaus described the design as "… designing desert
mountains by the sea." Golfers are given spectacular views of the Sea of
Cortez from nearly every hole. Green fees include cart, bottled water and use of
the driving range. The par 72, Palmilla course "Mountain Nine" is
3,602 yards; the "Arroyo Nine" is 3,337 yards. Bill Schaffer is the
Palmilla course resident PGA Pro. Rentals and instruction are available.
