Alcohol
Brunei is a dry country, but non-Muslim visitors over 17 years are allowed
alcohol for their own consumption. Brunei has the highest duty free allowance of
any country in the world.
Regulations permit two litres of alcohol (spirit or wine) and 12 cans of beer
to be imported up to twice a day. This can either be brought into the country
upon arrival or purchased at any border. The nearest border is 20 minutes from
the hotel by car, a visit to which is an event in itself and not to be missed. A
cosmopolitan atmosphere prevails, with Malay and Chinese food on offer to tables
of chatting visitors and locals as they wait for their duty free orders to be
prepared. Fun and festive!
Almost any brand of beer and spirits is available. The wines, including
sparkling varieties are very good, and come mostly from Australian and Italian
vineyards.
French Champagne and expensive French wines are not easily obtained at the
borders and are therefore the brands worth bringing from Europe, if so desired.
Guests wine may be served to them at the hotel restaurants (except the Lobby
Lounge and Atrium Cafe and at the Country Club and despite being a 5 star deluxe
hotel, The Empire does not charge corkage.
For those who enjoy a drink, this provides for a very reasonably priced
holiday; here the bar bill will definitely not exceed the cost of accommodation,
as so often can be the case.
Alcohol purchases for groups may be organised in advance of arrival.
Halal
Respecting the Muslim religion and culture, all food used at The Empire Hotel
and Country Club is halal. Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful and
permitted and Muslims around the world only consume food made from halal
ingredients.
Foods which are not halal include pork and its by-products, animals not
slaughtered according to the Halal procedures, alcohol and intoxicants,
carnivorous animals, birds of prey and land animals without external ears, blood
and blood by-products.
Using halal food and products does not affect the quality of taste or flavor
of individual dishes.
