Information about Chios

Chios is an island with a tumultuous and violent history, today, a passive, peaceful and welcoming environment blessed with a natural landscape of beauty and traditional villages. An island ideal for those seeking history and culture as well as visitors who simply wish to experience Greece.

A volcanic island with a mountainous region great for walking and exploring with beautiful beaches and coves along the rugged coastline. The mediaeval villages are still inhabited today and with great pride the Chians keep their traditions and homes as they were centuries ago.

Its capital and chief port is also called Chios, a lively town on its east coast opposite the shores of ancient lonia. Chios has a large mediaeval castle that dominates the harbour. Its walls enclose the old section of town and the old houses have lattice windows and balconies. The town has two  museums, the Archaeological Museum with finds of the island and the Museum of Modern Greek Sculpture containing works by the famous sculptor, Halepas, among others.
