Information about Trikala

The Prefecture of Trikala is located in west Thessalia covering an area of 3,384 km2. The land is entirely mountainous with highest peak of Mount Tzoumerka at 2,429 m and with the Aheloos River feeding the artificial lake of Mesohora. In the south east there is the small valley of Trikala, crossed by the Pineos River forming the artificial lake of Pylis. This valley is part of the large, fertile Thessaly plain.

To the north there is Meteora, a place famed for its strange-shaped rocks, the result of a geological phenomenon unexplained until recently. Byzantine monasteries located on these rocks and caves are reminders of the past and testimonials of faith. The view of the plain from the peaks of these rocks at sunset is an awesome sight.

Trikala is a land of natural beauty and interesting places with high mountains for hunting, climbing and the ski centre of Pertouli for winter sports.

The climate is very warm in summer and very cold in winter.
