The Prefecture of Thesprotia is located in the west of Epirus covering
an area of 1,515 km2 and is bordered by the sea to the west. The
land is mainly mountainous with the highest peak of Mount Tzamanta at 1,806 m.
There is only a little valley crossed by the Thiamis River where the city of
Igoumenitsa is located.
The Prefecture is an important centre with the Port of Igoumenitsa, the most
northern port of western Greece, connecting with Italy and from there to the
rest of Europe.
The climate is mild on the coast, the interior is warm in summer and very
cold in winter with frequent snow.
