Information about Arta

Arta is the second largest town in the Epirus region and famed for its old stone bridge on the outskirts of the town spanning over the Arahthos River. There are numerous Byzantine monuments in and around the town. The large Church of Panagia Parigoritissa was built in the 13th century, unique in style containing several elements of western architecture and a peculiar system of supports for its dome and is located within the town.

Because of the natural beauty of the area, the prefecture of Arta today has become a popular tourist destination. The coastal area has characteristic fishing villages and the coastal wetlands are home to many species of rare water birds. There are traditional villages on its green mountains that offer pleasant quiet walks in nature. The area offers a slightly varied climate, mild in the south near the sea and cooler in the north in the mountain area.
