Kozani is located in western Macedonia and bordering the counties of
Pella and Florina to the north, Imathia and Pieria to the east, Larissa in the
southeast, Kastoria to the west and Grevena in the south.
The area is best known for the role it plays in supplying electricity to the
rest of Greece, however, it is also involved in a number of other types of
production including the sought-after Tranavaltos marble and the fur industry.
Kozani is the only place in Greece where saffron is grown as a crop and the
excellent quality fruit grown here is mostly peaches and apples. The area is
also famed for its dairy produce and fine wines.
There are many finds from prehistoric, ancient and Byzantine times showing
that this county has a rich, interesting history. The county is an impressive
combination of mountains, plains, valleys, large streams and lakes, a wealth of
flora and fauna, the natural habitat coexists in harmony with the traditions of
the area as well as the modern way of life of its residents.
