Manila, city capital of the Philippines on
Manila Bay, situated on. The metropolis
is officially called the National Capital Region and is composed of Manila plus 16 neighboring cities
and municipalities, including Quezon City, the capital from 1948-1976.
Manila is the center of the country's largest metropolitan area, its
chief port, and the focus of all governmental, commercial, industrial, and
cultural activities. It is
the seat government administration, the fashion center, the intellectual
pace-setter, the fountain head of all religious and educational movements; and
of course, enormous shopping arcades. It is polictics and art; markets and
churches; banks and universities - the whole life. In addition to its extensive and superb port facilities,
Manila has a major international airport and is the terminus of the island's
railroads and highways. It is the manufacturing center of the Philippines, with
large metal fabrication, automobile assembly, and textile and garment
industries. It also has food- and hemp-processing plants, cigarette factories,
and establishments making toilet articles, pharmaceuticals, and other chemical
products.
The navigable Pasig River flows through the city, dividing it into two
sections, with Intramuros and Ermita on the south bank and the
"newer" section on the northern bank.
Malacanang Palace, the presidential mansion, is on the Pasig.
The term Metro Manila (the word metro itself always describes the
metropolitan area). Manila is an old city, may be older than
historians can determine. Perhaps having been around for a long time give its
"Poise and Grandeur" . Manila is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Asia. It has many daily
newspapers and periodicals, radio and television stations, a symphony orchestra,
and more than 20 universities and colleges.Metro Manila is the smallest of the country's regions, but the most populous
and the most densely populated, having a population of around 10 million in an area only 636 square kilometers large. It is also the only region
without any provinces.
Weather condition in Manila are more or less
the same as those prevailing in other cities. Due to its lower elevation, the
temperature is generally higher, humidity and wind velocity are proportional
higher.
