County Galway is in the Republic of Ireland with the county town of
Galway. The county is divided into two sections by Lough Corrib with the
mountains of Twelve Pins in the Connemara Lake region lying to the west; a
rolling plain stretches to the east that is partially bog covered. The principal
rivers in Galway are the Clare, the Clarinbridge, the Dunkelin and the Shannon
forming part of its eastern boundary and its tributary, the Suck. The shoreline
is extremely irregular with numerous islands as the Aran Islands lying off the
mouth of Galway Bay.
Galway city, known as the ‘city of the tribes’ with its narrow streets,
old stone shop fronts and bustling pubs. The city itself is a continuing centre
of growth with its University, Institute of Technology, Theatres, Cathedral,
Castle, Hotels, Docks, Industries as well as other interesting attractions. A
great many of the inhabitants are Irish speakers with much of the ancient Gaelic
culture is preserved and is rich in Irish mythology. The seaside suburb of
Salthill is an important tourist centre and gateway to the scenic areas of the
county.
