The Prefecture of Rodopi is located in central Thrace covering an area
of 2,543 km2 and bordered by the sea to the south. The land is
mountainous in the north with the highest peak of Mount Papikio at 1,483 m. In
the south there is the valley of Komotini. This valley is fertile with the River
Filiouri running through it from Mount Rodopi. Lake Vistonis is to the west and
borders with the Prefecture of Xanthi.
The capital is the city of Komotini. Far from main line tourism, the land
offers a quiet vacation in untouched nature.
The archaeological site of the ancient city of Maronia with pre-historic
remains is of great interest for visitors.
