The Prefecture of Rethymnon is one of the four Prefectures
of the island of Crete. The main town is located on the north Mediterranean
coast with Renaissance architecture, Venetian Fortress, museums
and beaches.
The centre of the Prefecture is mountainous and home to the highest peak of
Psiloritis at over 2,400 m. An area with many long sandy beaches on the north
coast and many sandy coves on the south coast lapped by the Libyan Sea.
The area is rich in characteristic villages
and areas of great natural beauty, as well as caves and soaring mountains. The
endless beaches, the monasteries and the churches, the ancient sites or the
Venetian and Turkish monuments. The local people are famous for their
hospitality, will befriend you and may even share a glass or two of
"raki", a welcome to a visitor.
