Goteborg Och Bohus Lan is situated on the south coast of Sweden. Goteborg
city on the Kattegat at the mouth of the Gota Alv river is Sweden's most
important seaport and its second largest city; a major commercial and industrial
centre as well as a rail junction with large shipyards and fisheries.
Goteborg was founded by Charles IX in 1604, but was soon after destroyed by
the Danes in the Kalmar War. It was rebuilt by Gustavus II in 1619 and quickly
became a major commercial centre with large colonies of Dutch and English
merchants. The Swedish East India Company was founded in Goteborg in 1731. The
port was expanded in the mid-18th century and in the early 20th century became
the terminus of an important transatlantic shipping service. The Goteborg
licensing system for the control of liquor sales originated in 1865.
Goteborg has two universities; several academies, museums, and parks; an
opera house and one of the country's largest sport stadiums. The area
manufacturing industry includes cameras, paper, fabricated metal, motor
vehicles, processed food, mineral oils and refined petroleum.
