Campania, is a region central Italy, including the islands of Capri,
Ischia, and Procida. It is divided into Benevento, Caserta, Naples, and Salerno
provinces. Naples the capital of the region, hosts sights such as: Castel Nuovo
or Maschio Angioino from 13th century, symbol of the city, embellished by the
monumental Arch of Triumph from 15th century and the Museo Archeologico National
which holds the treasures from the nearby roman ruins of Pompeii and
Herculaneum.
The central coast of the region is mostly high and rocky, with volcanic
ridges and the crater of Vesuvius. The northern and southern coastal areas are
fertile plains. The mild climate, the enchanting countryside, the exuberance and
the fervid imagination of its people, for over twenty-five centuries have made
this region one of the most charming and sought after holiday resorts in the
world. Capri,famous for its grottoes and a good place for walking, Ischia with
its beach resorts and thermal springs known for its tranquil and relaxing
atmosphere, Sorrento and Amalfi became the chosen destinations of visitors from
many countries as they are hosts of equally beautiful sights and fine scenery,
as well as historical sites in the inland areas.
Throughout its history the Etruscans, Greeks, Romans, Normans, Angevins,
Spanish, French and Austrians arrived here in armies as conquerors, only to
become captured by the sweet intensity of its colours, perfumes, flavours and
songs of this happy land.Tourist attractions include the Sibyl's cave at Cumae,
Paestum an archaeological sight of some of the best preserved monuments of the
ancient Greece world, the Roman ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum (some of the
most interesting sights of the area), the volcanoes of Vesuvius and Solfatara,
the Costiera Amalfitana and a large amphitheatre near Caserta.
