Umbria, region central Italy. Perugia is the capital of the landlocked
region, which is divided into the provinces of Perugia and Terni.
Crossed by the Apennines in the east, Umbria is almost entirely mountainous
or hilly. The Tiber and the Nera are the main rivers; Lake Trasimeno is in the
west. There are a number of popular tourist spots, including Assisi,
Spoleto, Perugia, Orvieto, and Castiglione.

Romanesque-Gothic Palazzo del Popolo and the famous Duomo, one of the finest
examples of Italian Gothic architecture housing many famous paintings.
Umbria has the best of all popular Italian worlds. With its hill towns,
excellent white wine and rolling landscapes it is a mirror image of Tuscany,
without the traffic. Unlike Tuscany, the region of Umbria is made up of small
towns and villages where people live, work their farms and carry on with a
living spirit of Italy.
Umbria is well known as the "Green Heart of Italy". This territory
has a huge cultural patrimony from the priceless museums of Perugia, Todi,
Foligno and Montefalco, to the modern art galleries in Città di Castello, as
well as the specialised wine and ceramic museums respectively in Torgiano and
Deruta. In Umbria there are also many aquatic resources such as Lake Trasimeno,
Lake Piediluco, Lake Corbara and the river Tiber, the longest river that goes
through the region from north to south. The breathtaking Marmore Falls are
formed by the union of both the rivers Nera and Velino near the city of Terni.
Also underground one can find many caves and springs that are enormous
interesting from a speleological point of view. This spring water is sold as
mineral water and also used for therapeutic purposes. Umbria is famous for its
natural delicious and simple cuisine. The principle products from the region
include sausages, cheese, dairy products, legumes and truffles. The region's
climate favours the cultivation of grape vines allowing for the production of
world famous wines from Orvieto, Torgiano, Montefalco.
