Limnos is a volcanic island and was the home of the god Hephaistos and
his most important place of worship, according to mythology. The island has a
long history; two of its cities, Myrina and Hephaistia, were extremely
prosperous during ancient times.
Today, the capital is still called Myrina, or Kastro, sitting at the back of
the bay in exactly the same location as its ancient namesake. A Venetian Castle
presides over the characteristic captains’ houses with their wooden balconies.
Myrina is also renowned for its excellent fish restaurants.
There is an important Archaeological Museum with finds from the region as
well as from Hephaistia, Cabeiria and Poliochne, representing every period from
prehistoric times to the Hellenic consisting of relief work, idols, pottery and
sculptures.
