The Prefecture of Evros is located in the eastern part of Thrace and
its capital is the city of Alexandroupolis and covers an area of 2,543 km2,
bordered by the sea to the south. The land is mountainous in the south west with
the highest peak of Mount Silo, 1,065 m with the rest of the land being fertile
green plains. There are two large rivers in the region, the Nestos River to the
west and the Evros River to the east. The mouth of the Evros River is an
important wetland with protected rare species of birds and other animals, it is
not permitted to hunt in this area.
The Prefecture of Evros is a place with natural beauty with beautiful clean
beaches, the wildlife reserves of the Evros River mouth, the caves and the
historical remains in the area of Didimoticho. Many people visit the therapeutic
springs of Loutros.
The capital, Alexandroupolis, is an attractive modern city that merits a
visit. The green island of Samothraki is only 29 n.m. from
Alexandroupolis.
It has a warm climate in summer, but is very cold in winter.
