Lefkada is a mountainous island covered with dense vegetation to the
east and south. Its eastern coast slopes gently down to the sea sheltered from
the wind and dotted with thickly wooded islets. In contrast, the west coast is
steep with a few stunted pine trees and lined with spectacular stretches of
endless golden beach. The fauna of Lefkada includes rare species of birds, wild
geese, pelicans etc.
Lefkada has a coastline of 117 km and has approximately 21,100 inhabitants.
It is an island of the Ionian group that you can drive on to as it separatedfrom
the mainland by a narrow isthmus.
Nydri is the primary tourist village retaining its traditional charm.
There are smaller islands nearby with beautiful pebble or sandy beaches,
restaurants and very friendly people who still dress in traditional costume.
There is Meganisi, Kalamos and Skorpios of Aristotle and Jackie Onassis fame.
