The island of Amorgos was a major centre of the Cycladic civilization
and the landscape has archaeological sites of importance. Amorgos is a very
traditional island reflected by every settlement on the beautiful landscape.
Amorgos is a beautiful, distinctive town and the capital of the island with
Katapola and Egiali its two ports. Katapola is a pretty natural harbour on the
Aegean Sea. The entire island is the peak of a mountain range and has steep
shores to the east and small peninsulas in the west.
The 2,000 inhabitants of the island are mainly fishermen, farmers and
stock-breeders. Some are engaged in tourism that has grown considerably in
recent years.
The people of Amorgos love to tell stories about their island to visitors as
treat everybody to "rakomelo" at the quiet coffee shops.
