Thassos is one of the North Aegean Islands, appreciated for its
beautiful beaches, mountain villages and archaeological remains. It also has
lovely forests of oaks and olives, waterfalls, rock pools and an important
ancient site called the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, once a major religious
centre.
This small, almost circular island has a population of about 14,000. Its
coastal fishing villages have now become modern tourist resorts, the old
mountain settlements retain their picturesque charm and traditions. The main
centre is Limenas, Thassos Town and principal port is a hive of activity.
It is still undeveloped in comparison with other Greek islands, so being
something of a 'find' for visitors.
