Thessaly is in the central section of mainland Greece surrounded by high
mountain ranges encircling a low plain. Bordering Macedonia to the north, Sterea
Hellas to the south, Epirus to the west and the Aegean to the east.
It has a higher percentage of flatland than any other district of Greece. The
mountains with lakes and forests, the sea with the islands and the plains with
rivers offer a diversity of landscape. The area is known as 'the breadbasket' of
Greece.
