Sterea Hellas is in central Greece and is one of the most mountainous.
Its position accounts for the great variety in climate, which is dry inland and
mild on the coast. The contours of the landscape are diverse from thickly wooded
green slopes, hills with pines, oaks, poplars and fast-moving streams separated
by flat lands, plateaus and lakes, alternating with the countless bays, an
intricate network of coves - some peaceful, some sheer and rugged - picturesque
islands decorating the south west coast.
Between the Gulfs of Euboea and Corinth is the district Boeotia with
picturesque villages, beautiful beaches and mountains.
The capital Livadia is built amphitheatrically on the foothills of Mount
Helikon, fames in antiquity for the Oracle of Trophonios Zeus and the two
Springs of Forgetfulness (Lethe) and Memory (Mnemosyne), to the north of the
town. Historical and mythological Delfi attracts many visitors each year.
