The island of Spetses has a great history and the privilege of
national recognition for the vital role it played during the Greek revolution
against the Ottoman Empire. Visitors have the chance to re-live those heroic
times surrounded by remarkable historic sites that are maintained with loving
care. The most famous is the mansion of Bouboulina, the heroine of the 1821
Revolution as well as the mansion of Mexis that has been turned into a museum.
Today, the island is known for its unique architecture, picturesque mansions
and varied landscape with a beautiful combination of pine trees, rocks, sand and
sea.
Motor vehicles are not allowed on the island, the most popular transport is a
bicycle or horse and cart. The old harbour and one of the oldest wooden boat
building yards in Greece are just a few of the sights to see.
